〈Twilight〉
Once again, a river and a bridge make an appearance. This is the Kano River, and the one you see in the distance is Sanmaibashi Bridge. Across that bridge lies the Numazu station, home to seventy-four Hatagoya (inns). The subtitle for this scene is "Twilight." This young family, having traveled all day, must have felt a great sense of relief seeing the houses of Numazu illuminated by the rising full moon beyond the darkening forest and river.
The father cat is carrying a massive Tengu mask on his back. I wonder—is he a carver who crafted it himself, or a traveling performer who uses it in his acts? Either way, the mask and this charming family add a touch of warmth to the serene landscape. Walking behind his wife and young daughter to ensure their safety, he seems like a truly kind father cat. It reminds me of a poem by the Nara-period poet Yamanoue no Nekora (Cat-ra) from the Chiba-shu (Collection of a Thousand Leaves):
"Silver vine, mice, or even fish—what use are they to me? For no treasure is more precious than a kitten, meow."

〈Fuji in the Morning〉
The subtitle is "Fuji in the Morning." I’ve painted Mount Fuji in the scenes of Kawasaki and Hiratsuka before, but there, she was merely a supporting player adding a splash of color. Here, however, she is the undisputed star, showing off her majesty right in the center of the frame. To emphasize her status as the tallest peak in all Japan, I even broke the rules and let her summit poke right out of the print's border. A little "surprise effect," you might say! Hara is the smallest station among the 33, with only twenty-five inns, but I think this grand view of Fuji more than makes up for its size.
Many of you likely know the famous poem by the Nara-period "Poet Cat," Yamabe no Nekohito (included in the One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Cats). The "Tago-no-ura" shore mentioned in his verse isn't far from this Hara station at all.
"Stepping out onto Tago-no-ura shore, I was flustered, to see the snow falling on Fuji’s high price (peak)."
(Note: When I went to Tago-no-ura and saw Fuji's snowy peak, I wondered if I could buy the whole mountain. But when I asked a realtor for the "high price," I was so flustered by the cost that I panicked!) — From An Introduction to Cat Literature History by Dr. Mikejiro Nekotani, Professor Emeritus at Ocha-nomazu Female Cat University. 〈Night Snow〉
Snow is falling, meow-meow! Hail is falling, meow-meow! It falls and falls and won’t stop at all! The dogs are delighted, racing around the yard, (Honestly, what a barbaric tendency compared to us cats!) But the cats are all curled up under the kotatsu! (Now, this is the proper way to spend a snowy day!)
Looking at this scene of Kanbara, those old songs I learned at the temple school just naturally spring to mind. For these 33 Stations, I didn't want to just show peaceful sunny days; I wanted to capture every possible situation—early mornings, twilights, rain, wind, and all four seasons. I chose Kanbara as the setting for this snowy night.
Since Kanbara faces Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, it’s actually quite warm compared to the deep mountains of Shinshu. This isn't exactly a "typical" winter scene for this area. But once every four or five years, it turns into this silver world and catches the cats by surprise! On a day like this, any palanquin (kago) without "snow sandals" is bound to slip or get stranded on the road—it’s a disaster! The Shogunate's weather forecasts are never reliable; they issue heavy snow warnings when not a flake falls, and then we get a massive dump of snow like this when they said it would be nothing. It's enough to make any cat lose its whiskers!

〈Okitsu River〉
Here we see a scene of a dog and a palanquin (kago) crossing the Okitsu River. But look closely! This palanquin isn't being carried by the usual two cats—it takes four! And for good reason: the passenger is a "Sekitori" (sumo wrestler) cat, nearly twice the size of a normal one! He’s curled up quite tightly inside that cramped kago.
You can see the different techniques they use to carry such a heavy load. One method is tying a horizontal bar so two cats can shoulder it together, while another is splitting the main poles to the left and right. The bearers in the front look like they're having a particularly rough time! Yet, the Sekitori guest seems to be enjoying the struggle, with a faint smirk playing on his whiskers. Every now and then, you encounter a sadistic cat who quietly delights in the toil of others, don't you?
I wonder how the crossing fee works in a case like this. I just happened to see this scene and paint it, so whether they charged a "special heavy-load fee" or kept it a flat rate regardless of the passenger’s weight... well, this old cat hasn't the foggiest idea.

〈Abe River〉
Similar to the Okitsu scene before it, this shows the crossing of the Abe River. Did you notice that the three "cutie" cats crossing to the other side are all using different methods? The one in the middle is inside a palanquin (kago) tied to a litter platform (rendai), carried by four cats. To the right, another guest sits directly on a platform of the same size, also carried by four. And right in the foreground, we see a guest getting a piggyback ride from a single footman. I suspect the piggyback ride isn't exactly one-fourth the price of the platform, though!
On the opposite bank, a dog-handler is leading a dog laden with cargo into the water. It’s quite a struggle if the dog isn't used to the water and starts to resist or panic! Watching this from afar, another cat and a footman have just begun their crossing. The male cats, who don't mind getting wet as long as they have their loincloths on, would strip off their clothes, bundle them up with their luggage, balance it all on their heads, and follow the footman across. It might have been a refreshing experience in the heat of summer, but I wouldn't recommend it in early spring with the snowmelt, or the chilly days of autumn—let alone in the dead of winter!

〈Famous Teahouse at Mariko〉
Crossing the Abe River brings us to the Mariko station. The subtitle is "Famous Teahouse," and here we see two guests enjoying the house specialty, "Tororo-jiru" (Grated Soup). You might wonder, "Do cats really eat grated yam soup?" Well, of course! But this isn't yam—this soup is made by grating the finest "Toro" (fatty tuna)! It’s truly exceptional. (Though why it’s called Tororo with an extra 'ro' instead of just Toro soup remains a mystery to me!)
The young waitress is keeping busy, juggling her customers and the newborn kitten on her back. I imagine the husband cat is working as the chef in the kitchen, while the other kittens aren't back from school or kindergarten yet. Running a restaurant in this era—without refrigerators, freezers, gas stoves, or microwaves—must have been a massive feat. Or then again, perhaps running a modern restaurant with all those gadgets is even harder, what with the constant pressure of paying off loans! Outside, the plum trees are beginning to bloom, and the pink sky creates a warm, cozy mood. It brings to mind a verse by the poet cat, Hattori Nyansetsu:
"One cat, then another— each bringing its own tiny spark of warmth."

〈Mount Utsu〉
As the subtitle "Mount Utsu" suggests, this captures the valley of Mount Utsu between Mariko and Okabe. The trees in the center are beginning to turn red, signaling that winter is purr-ty close. The local cats look busy gathering firewood for the cold months ahead. The river flowing here is the Okabe River, and you can see it's neatly lined with stone walls. Legend has it that this was built under the orders of the great leader Nekotomi Hideyoshi.
In the future, society might become so obsessed with getting to a destination quickly that cats will stop walking and savoring the beauty of these mountain passes. If they were to dig a tunnel here and just zip through in cars or trains, staring at nothing but dry, grey concrete, wouldn't they lose something far more precious than the time they gain? I fear such a society might lead to a plague of "Utsu-depression" (melancholy of Utsu). I can only pray that the future of Japan doesn't turn out that way.

〈Relay of Cats and Dogs〉
The swapping of footmen and dogs at each station took place at the Toiyaba (transit office), a process known as "Relay of Cats and Dogs." This scene shows the hustle and bustle at the Fujieda station. In the upper left, a footman has just finished his shift, setting down his luggage and wiping away his sweat. Meanwhile, those about to depart are busy loading dogs or waiting for the signal to start their journey.
There’s a whole team here: the Nekosoku-sashi directs the cat-footmen, the Inu-sashi handles the dogs, and the Chotsuke (ledger clerk) keeps the records—that’s the one with the abacus. The boss of it all is the Toiya, who watches over the operation from a raised floor. In this picture, he’s exchanging a sly look with one of his directors. I bet he’s thinking, "Another profitable day, tee-hee-hee!" though he’d never say it out loud in front of the customers.
I hear that once in a blue moon, two Daimyo processions arrive at the same time. When that happens, the staff reportedly abandon their posts and bolt! You can’t blame them—the two Daimyos will inevitably fight over who goes first, and the transit office becomes the target of their fury. When you’re dealing with angry samurai cats carrying sharp swords, no amount of lives is enough. Running away is simply the best business strategy!

〈Sayo-no-Nakayama〉
The subtitle "Sayo-no-Nakayama" refers to a mountain pass 252 meters above sea level. It’s infamous as one of the toughest spots on the Cat-kaido. But don’t be fooled—height isn't the only thing that makes a place dangerous. In fact, the most perilous height is exactly 100 centimeters. Why, you ask? Because if a cat falls from that height, it could cost us one of our lives! (And we only have nine, you know!)
Look closely, and you’ll see several stories unfolding in this tiny frame. On the right, a dandy young fellow in a stylish raincoat stands waiting for a palanquin. It looks like he spotted an empty one returning from a job and called out just in time. (You have to be quick with your paw, or they'll cruise right past you!)
Down below, groups of two and three traveling cats are gathered around a large, round stone. You can always tell which cat is the chatterbox and which is the listener just by their whiskers, can't you? They’re likely discussing the "Night-Weeping Stone," one of the Seven Wonders of Enshu.
What’s that? You want me to tell you the legend right now? No, no, that would be far too bland. The best way is to go stand by that stone yourself for a while. I’m sure a passing traveler will be more than happy to spin the yarn for you.

〈Distant View of Mount Akiba〉
Once you conquer the mountains and reach the flatlands, you’ll find the Kakegawa station. Just past that lies the Futase River, spanned by this very bridge: the Ooike-bashi. On the bridge, a monk and his young acolyte coming from the far side are about to pass a traveler heading the other way. The monk has a perfectly calm whiskers, likely because he’s made the poor little acolyte carry every single piece of luggage! The kid is soaked in sweat.
The two cats bowing their heads—are they paying respects to the monk, or just bracing against a sudden gust of wind on the bridge? What’s that? You want me to tell you because I’m the one who painted it? Bah! I’ll leave that to the interpretation of every cat who looks at it.
The kitten following behind isn't dressed for travel; he's a local. He’s probably just pacing back and forth because he wants everyone to see his fancy new tie-dyed kimono. (We cats are experts at pacing, after all!) In the distance, you see Mount Akiba and some kites flying. It looks like one kite's string has snapped.
Oh? You say you see a cat doing "nora-shigoto" (field work) over there? No, no, that’s just farming. True "nora-shigoto" is the specialized business of searching for "nora-neko" (stray cats) who’ve lost their way!
