〈Morning View〉
The starting point of the Cat-kaido is Edo, and I’ve chosen the bustling Nihonbashi as the very first scene. In the foreground, you see the business-cats busy buying and selling fish; after all, a massive fish market is just a stone’s throw away from here. Meanwhile, up on the bridge, a Daimyo’s procession is finally departing Edo to return to their home domain after finishing their official duties in the city.
The tall poles you see being brandished at the front to show off their prestige are called "Torige" (feathered spears). Think of them like your modern-day neckties—they don't actually do anything functional, but they certainly make one look the part!
Actually, here’s a bit of secret history for you: these poles weren’t always this long. However, whenever they started spinning them, the cats watching from the roadside—and even the official-cats and samurai-cats in the procession itself—felt an irresistible urge to pounce! As soon as one cat would reach out a paw, everyone else would follow, and the whole procession would inevitably descend into total chaos. After much deliberation, the cat-officials came up with a solution: they made the poles so long that no one could reach the feathers. And thus, the problem was solved!
I bet this is the first time you’ve heard this little nugget of Japanese cat history, isn’t it?

〈Sunrise〉
At Nihonbashi, I showed you the front of the Daimyo Cat’s procession, but here I’ve captured the tail end. In crowded areas, they march ever so slowly, shouting "Bow down! Clear the way!" to look dignified. But once they hit a quiet stretch with fewer cats, they just scurry along like this—pitter-patter, pitter-patter. If they didn't pick up the pace, they’d never reach the next station in time!
The makeup of these processions varied by clan. In this Shinagawa scene, the very last cat is carrying "Ryogake"—small crates balanced on both ends of a shoulder pole.
Apparently, there’s nothing particularly important inside. My guess? It’s probably just cat teasers for the Lord Cat to play with after he’s stuffed his face with treats from the locals. And look at the girl at the Matatabi (Silver Vine) Manju shop—she’s looking back with a face that says, "Finally, they’re gone, meow!" I can’t blame her. No matter how many cats pass by in line, not a single one buys a bun. A big procession like this is just a nuisance for business!

〈Ferry at Rokugo〉
The Tama River separates Edo from Kanagawa, and here we see the ferry crossing that very river. I can’t quite recall if I painted this in early spring or late autumn, but look at Mount Fuji in the distance—the way the snow blankets it all the way to the base is simply paw-geous, isn't it?
On the ferry, you see some cats enjoying their kiseru pipes. You humans might brag that back then there were no health warnings on tobacco since medicine wasn't advanced, but the truth is, we didn't need them. The amount of tobacco leaf that fits in a kiseru is barely a tiny fraction of one of your modern cigarettes. We never smoked enough to actually do any harm!
In contrast to the cozy atmosphere on the boat, the cats waiting on the opposite bank look quite stiff and grumpy, don't they? But then again, watching another cat—especially a high-and-mighty official cat—looking a bit miserable just makes one’s own journey all the more enjoyable. A bit wicked of me, I know! Now, I wonder... did those two puffing on their pipes actually pay the ferry fare? I have a sneaky feline feeling they might have skipped out on it.

〈View of Kanagawa (The Heights)〉
The composition is similar to Shinagawa, but here we’re on a slope lined with teahouses. A fierce tug-of-war is underway between the "teahouse sisters" and some resistant travelers. Look at the girl at the top—she’s a novice, probably studying the brazen tactics of the two seasoned dames below. Will she eventually become a "purr-fessional" by getting just as pushy? Or perhaps those two below use brute strength because they lack the looks, while our fair-skinned cutie at the top only needs to say "Care to stop by?" in a sweet voice to make any old tom-cat turn 90 degrees left and dive into the shop with a grin.
In the midst of all this chaos, the sight of the pilgrims—likely a parent and child—walking quietly is quite striking. That kitten’s backside is simply adorable, isn't it? Still, it's a reminder that even tiny paws had to trek the same long distances as the adults back then. Traveling was a grueling business.
I sometimes imagine a far-off future where large "automated palanquins" move on their own, and kittens can just sit in the back watching TV or playing games until they reach their destination. Do you think such a world will ever actually exist?

〈Shinmachi Bridge〉
As you can tell from the subtitle "Shinmachi Bridge," the focus of this scene in Hodogaya is right on this bridge. Here we have a traveling cat and a "private palanquin" carrying a VIP. From this angle, it’s hard to tell if this luxury ride is a "Fur-lsior" or a "Cat-tury"—or perhaps something else entirely! A cat carrying luggage and a security-guard cat are accompanying them across the bridge. On the other side of the Katabira River, there’s a group of male cats wearing the same uniform; whether they’re connected to the VIP, I couldn't say.
Standing by the shop at the foot of the bridge is the proprietress, chatting away. The one in the blue kimono is from the Soba noodle shop. How do I know? Because there’s a sign behind her that says "2-8" (Nihachi). That’s a recipe of two parts flour to eight parts buckwheat. But the real star is the broth, made with plenty of dried sardines (niboshi). I guarantee that just one whiff of those sardines from the storefront will make your throat start purring uncontrollably! In fact, for us cats, the broth is more important than the noodles. Many customers order a bowl just to lap up the soup and leave the noodles behind!

〈Motomachi Branch Road〉
Totsuka was home to seventy-five Hatagoya (inns), and here I’ve depicted the storefront of one called "Nezumi-ya" (The Mouse House). If you leave Edo in the morning, an average cat would stop at Hodogaya, while a fast-pawed traveler would make it here to Totsuka to rest for the night.
The river flowing in front of the inn is the Kashio River. Now, don't go jumping in just because of the name—you might catch a loach, but you certainly won't find a "Casio" watch! That old cat is currently crossing the Ohashi Bridge. Above the "receptionist" cat welcoming guests, you can see signs listing the names of loyal tour groups.
By the way, the cats in the Daimyo processions didn't stay at ordinary inns like this; they used high-class "Honjin" reserved for the elite. It was a bit of "purr-scrimination," suggesting official cats were a rank above commoners. However, towards the end of the Edo period, a great cat named Nekozawa Yukichi appeared and gradually tore down those walls. He famously declared, "Heaven creates no cat above another cat, and no cat below another cat." And he was right! If you’ve ever seen a cat give birth, they do it lying down on their side. In other words: "Heaven creates cats next to each other!"

〈Yugyoji Temple〉
Starting from Nihonbashi in Edo, I’ve painted bridges in Hodogaya, Totsuka, and now here in Fujisawa. After all, riverside scenery always makes for a "paw-fect" picture, doesn't it? This one is the Daigiri Bridge, crossing the Sakai River. Up on the hill in the upper right, you can see Yugyoji Temple. I’ve exaggerated the hill a bit and hidden the crowded rooftops below with a light mist, making the hill look almost like an island. This trick helps separate the foreground from the distant view.
In the foreground, we see four "Zato" cats. A Zato is a blind male cat who makes a living as an acupuncturist, masseur, or lute player. As you can see, they usually don’t tie their fur in a topknot. The Torii gate in front is the entrance to Enoshima Shrine, and these four are likely on a pilgrimage there.
Now, here’s a wild thought: what if someone wrote a story about a Zato cat who carries a sword and goes around defeating wicked dogs? If they turned that into one of those "moving pictures" that are sure to be invented someday, it would be a massive hit, don't you think? Or is the public not foolish enough to fall for such a far-fetched story?

〈Nawate Road〉
Taking center stage is Mount Komayama. Did you spot Mount Fuji, capped with snow, just to the right? One of the best things about the first half of a journey on the Cat-kaido is how Fuji plays peek-a-boo with you along the way. That wooden post on the right is a Houjikui (boundary post). It marks the edge of the station—for example, saying "South of here is Hiratsuka territory." I've hidden four of these throughout the 33 Stations of the Cat-kaido. See if you can find them all!
The cat rushing toward us is a Hikyaku (express messenger). They say if you hire one, your mail arrives "hikyaku-tively" fast! As the roads improved in the Edo period, so did the service—some say they could get a letter from Kyoto to Kamakura in just three days. Though I don’t think they offered "scheduled delivery" back then!
Walking away from us are two cats returning with an "empty car." They’re a Tec-xy—no, I mean a Taxi—actually, it’s a palanquin (kago) crew! See how they’ve disassembled it? One carries the pole with the hats tied to it, and the other carries the main basket. It shows how lightweight those things were. If they were any heavier, adding a passenger's weight would have been a catastrophe! Of course, those luxury "Fur-lsior" and "Cat-tury" models for the high-ranking official cats are a different story...

〈Tora’s Rain〉
On the right, you can see the western side of Mount Komayama, which we also saw back in Hiratsuka. In other words, Hiratsuka is on the east and Oiso is on the west of this very mountain. To the left is the "Pacific Ocean"—or so I’d like to call it, but back when I painted this, us cats didn't use such fancy, westernized names for the sea.
About twenty years after I released these 33 Stations, those "Black Ships" arrived and caused a huge fuss. Five years later, I departed for the afterlife due to cholera. (Well, I suppose dying from a trendy, "high-class" foreign disease was a point of pride—I guess I played my part in the Westernization of Japan, eh?) Ten years after that, the Meiji government was formed, and all sorts of foreign things, including new place names, came flooding in.
Once you start a journey on the Cat-kaido, you must keep walking every single day, rain or shine. On rainy days, we wear straw raincoats (mino), but they get heavy with water and never stay fully dry. Your paws get muddy, and by the end of the day, you’re soaked right down to your fur. But a word of warning: the moment you enter an inn, do not immediately go "Brrrr-shake-shake-shake!" If you spray water all over the walls, the ceiling, the clerk, and the landlady, I guarantee you’ll get a scolding you won't forget!

〈Morning Mist〉
As the subtitle "Morning Mist" suggests, this scene captures a group of travelers setting off early in the morning. Notice how it takes four "assistants"—two palanquin bearers, one dog-sitter, and one footman—just to help two VIPs (one in the palanquin and one atop a dog) travel! Traveling in the old days was a massive undertaking.
To reach the next station by dusk, you can't be lazy and say, "Cats in spring sleep past the dawn." You have to start your day early like this! Though, of course, it's perfectly fine to keep napping inside the palanquin or on the dog's back once the journey starts, just like these guests. You can see the luggage perched on the roof of the palanquin; this was quite common back then, as you'll see again in the Narumi station (page 59).
In Ukiyo-e and Nishiki-e prints, it’s standard to have black outlines for everything. However, to capture the ethereal feel of the mist, I deliberately removed the outlines for the background trees, roofs, and the Torii gate. If I do say so myself, I think it captured the atmosphere brilliantly!
